"The Movement for Unity for a communion politics"

Abstract: At the first conference of the Political Movement for Unity, held in Castelgandolfo (Rome) June 9 - 11, 2000, Chiara Lubich presents the features of “communion politics”. Talking about the history of the Focolare Movement, Lubich underlines the fundamental contribution of Igino Giordani in the development of the political sensitivity of the Movement itself. Starting from this point, some of the significant characters for the construction of a political design were highlighted: politics as a vocation, as a loving commitment for one’s neighbor and as social service; political authority as the the capability to take on responsibility, allowing wide participation in the management of public good. A true politician goes beyond the commitment towards its own “side”: the love for the other’s homeland as for one’s own and the love the other’s party as for one’s own become examples of universality. Particularly, fraternity is re-interpreted by Chiara Lubich in relation to liberty and equality. Fraternity creates a new lifestyle, it binds the political community and it helps to distinguish the competences of the various social players, valuing to each one. All of this helps society as a whole to achieve it’s main goal: common good.
