Abstract: In spite of the effort of educators to transmit the culture and values of democracy, we are witnessing their decline. This analysis of the decline examines rst of all the model of liberal education. Liberal or humanistic education (as opposed to “professional formation”) is an approach that is better suited to the transmission and formation of those values and basic abilities necessary for democracy. Nevertheless, when political education is observed from the point of view of fraternity, we can see two de ciencies in the formulation of liberal education: a weakening of willpower (moral akrasia) and a solipsistic idea of human ful lment. The principle of fraternity can contribute to the development of liberal education. It can overcome the shortcomings mentioned and help to strengthen present demo- cratic systems.
